Another chance to fail

I recently saw a quote "Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right."
-- Oprah Winfrey
It is a great quote but I remember being in a study group with Judy Murdoch, http://www.judymurdoch.com/. We studied a book called Failing Forward by John C. Maxwell, http://www.amazon.com/Failing-Forward-Make-Most-Mistakes/dp/0785274308 . Basically it says that in order to "get it right" we have to be willing to fail. Most discoveries and many inventions are results of failure, one thing failed but in the process something else was found.

I believe the best thing we can do is learn from our mistakes, whether it is learnining what not to do, learning a differnet way to do something or learning something totally unrelated to what you were trying to do. This weekend I was trying to make some picture gifts and upload what I had onto a website that would mae the gift with what I provided. I spent a lot of time figuring out what looked best and what would work. Even though I spent a lot of time I had learned a lot and wasn't frustrated. I again realized it was OK to spend time trying do do things even though I failed many time and that eventually I could "get it right" as Oprah said.

My hope for myself (and others) for the New Year is that I will have many more opportunities to fail forward and get it right.

Action step: Try something new.

1. Notice how many times you fail before you get it right.
2. Take note of your feelings about each step and what you are willing or not willing to do.
3. Ask yourself if you can relate this to other areas of your life or other projects you work on.
4. Now try the process with something else.

5. Have a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!
