Taming the Energy Vampire in Your Life
(You may want to read the previous post Oct. 31,2009 on Energy Vampires if you haven't done so already.)
Even during the winter energy vampires are out there maybe even more because people usually stay inside more and are in closer contact. It helps to prepare yourself in advance to meet them so you can have a stockpile of ideas for dealing with them and not be vulnerable to what they maybe doing to you and your emotions. Don't worry though if you haven't prepared, just go with the flow and to take away emotional pressure you feel imagine them with a cape and wings.
Below are several steps to help you deal with the energy vampires that you may encounter.
1. Get a support system- After 50 it sometimes seems it is harder to find a support system. People get comfortable with being with certain family members or friends that they don't see all the other people they could bring into their lives.
a. Develop Criteria for the kind of support you want.
b. When you talk to your family and friends find out their point of view and see if it fits your current criteria. When you meet new people talk to them about the same criteria and see if they are a fit for the support you are looking for.
c. Make this easy and relaxed so you will feel comfortable with developing your support system and maybe even making new friends.
2.Reassess/change your relationships-If you find it difficult to be with the people you consider your support system then it is time to reassess your relationships. That does not mean you have to get rid of relationships, just change their focus or the amount of time you spend with certain people.
3. In crease your self respect.-Once you have a support system that encourages you to do more and supports you when you are out of your comfort zone it is easier to increase your self respect.
4.At the same time you increase your self respect you also can increase your confidence. Some ways to increase your confidence are:
A.Build on your strengths- make a list of what you like best about yourself, what you do best and what you are happiest doing. If you focus on these things usually you will enjoy what you do more as well as you will most likely feel better about yourself and do a better job.
B.Take care of yourself- Taking care of yourself is the most important thing you can do. Energy Vampires sometimes encourage people to resist doing this so they will pay more attention to the energy vampires (this is not always intentional though sometimes it is a learned pattern from others). Taking care of yourself helps to keep you healthy to do more things that you chose for yourself as well as others.
5.Develop a plan and time line
Although the previous steps take a while and don't have to be done in a day, it is helpful to have a plan and a time line for when you will spend time on accomplishing your goals. Make them realistic as well as enjoyable for you and for those with whom you choose to spend time.
6. Have fun at what you do and with whom you are with. This last step will especially help you ward off future vampires and enjoy your life. Make sure the fun is a responsible type of fun so that you will not be someone else's energy vampire.
